Our next talk is:

Victorian Wigan by Graham Stirrup on Monday 12th October at 7pm

During the Victorian era, Britain became increasingly industrial and urban, with factories, mills, mines and pits transforming both the economy and the lives of millions of people with the British Empire expanding aggressively to cover one-quarter of the globe. But this immense national wealth produced a stark contrast between the social classes, with the wealthy upper class enjoying unprecedented luxury, while the rapidly growing working class endured hard labour, low wages, and cramped living conditions. This talk looks at the dramatic impact the industrial revolution had on Wigan and the day to day lives of our predecessors.

A bit about the speaker:

Graham started his working life as a mechanical engineering apprentice at the National Coal Board workshops at Kirkless in New Springs. He has worked in various departments within the coal industry both above and below ground, and ended up as the Marketing Manager for Industrial Coal Sales at the area headquarters.

During this time, the coal industry’s rich social history ignited a passion to explore the lives of people from the past & bring their day to day lives vividly back to life. He has been giving presentations all around the North West for over 20 years, and then on cruise ships for 16 years.
